Named for pioneer John B. Denton, this town became known as a hub of higher education early on in its history. The establishment of the Texas Woman’s University and the University of North Texas allowed the town to develop a prestigious reputation.
The population grew to a little over 100,000 once the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport was established nearby. Denton is located near to Dallas, so it enjoys a lot of the overflow from there, growing as that area grows and being influenced by the changes that happen in the larger cities nearby.
The town mostly relies on its university students, and it has earned a reputation as a college town. This hot and humid town enjoys a nonpartisan city council, allowing it to stand out among many of the surrounding cities. The town is served by commuter buses and rail services that travel throughout the city and connect to the larger Dallas-Fort Worth area. Shuttle services also pass through Denton. There are even designated shuttle services for senior citizens, such as the Special Programs for Aging Needs. Those who live in Denton but work in Dallas can catch the express bus that will take them right into downtown Dallas every day.
Every year, the town hosts the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo. While the event is considered somewhat small for state fairs in general, it does bring in more than 100,000 people as it runs for nine days. Concerts are offered every night, and admission to the fair is free. The concerts often feature relatively well-known names in the music industry, including Pat Green and the Bellamy Brothers.
For year-round sightseeing, the Bayless Selby House Museum is a preserved Victorian home that features many antiques. The guided tours will fill tourists in on the history of the family that lived there and what was happening in the area at the time the house was bought. After the tour, the nearby Greenhouse Restaurant offers down home cooking that compliments the museum house perfectly.
Denton Square is an essential stop for visitors to the area. It hosts historic buildings like the Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square. It is also home to a museum and several government offices, as well as a few of the more popular ships in the area. The Denton Holiday Lighting Festival really makes the square stand out, as it receives particularly festive and intricate decorations to celebrate the historic square.
The city and the surrounding area is home to a number of eclectic parks. Many of these are conventional recreational areas with playgrounds, large grassy expanses and sporting facilities, but the Denton Natatorium and Water Works Park offers something a little different. It has a wide range of water slides and water-related activities for young and old. The park even offers private venues for parties and events.
Every year, Denton hosts music festivals, craft beer events, rodeos and charity balls from time to time, ensuring that there is always something for residents and visitors to do.
